Inside every hound of an unloved budget guitar is a great instrument just waiting to get out.
We (that's Maurice the cat and me) offer a wide variety of services to make your guitar play brilliantly - just how it should.
I do the dog work and Maurice is the top cat in the partnership. He's also the 'poster boy' in the logo. Nice work if you can get it!

"What you're doing is a quiet revolution" said one happy Reloved Guitars customer recently.
I always believed you can do good business by being open, honest and keeping it simple. I've no time for brand snobbery, dogma or myths. Guitar set up is simple, logical hard work - but it's fantastically rewarding and fun. Do it right and it works - and that applies to how you treat people as well.
Which is why Reloved Guitars is how it is: open, transparent and dedicated to making the best of every guitar that comes into the workshop whether it's mine or yours.
At Reloved Guitars I do a mixture of customer set ups (around 80% of my work) and guitar sales (the other 20%). As a result, I usually have a small and select range of beautifully set up budget guitars for sale. These guitars are sourced for their potential as quality instruments rather than for their brand names or their finish. Our pricing is honest and simple: the purchase price plus my setup fee (and any additional parts or repairs required).
If I am lucky enough to find a great budget guitar at a bargain price then I can pass that saving on to you which is why you can often buy a well set up Reloved guitar for the same price that others are charging for the same model without any set up work.
Precision fret levelling under playing configuration (for maximum accuracy) is the heart of a Reloved set up, not an expensive extra. Experience has shown me that unless you level the frets there’s little point in doing any of the other things that most guitar techs call a ‘set up’ – such as tweaking the truss rod or raising / lowering the bridge action.
In over 200 set ups (as at Aug 2016) I've conclusively proved the point I set out to make: just about any budget guitar* can be made to play as well as big brand names costing 4 or 5 times as much.
* I recently bought a Satellite 65/T - my first ever electric guitar bought back in 1981 - as a kind of personal 'Ultimate Reloved Guitars Test'. Well, when I finished it was playable...but still truly unlovable. Well, I did say 'just about any...' didn't I?
Take any of the classic budget guitars we love so much and they will, by definition, almost certainly have worn out frets. These will be so low that your fingers touch more fretboard than string and you will find it difficult to bend notes. Additionally, after 20 – 30 years of playing, your frets will also have deep grooves from playing open chords.
A Reloved re-fretting is like bringing your much-loved guitar back from the dead; a kind of re-incarnation; a phoenix from the flames.
I remove worn out old frets then recondition or
re-radius your neck so the wood looks like new before re-fretting the neck with a gauge of fret wire of your choice. Once the new frets are installed, I will work them into playing condition (levelling, re-profiling and polishing) and make sure there are no sharp or uncomfortable edges anywhere.
Pickups & Electrics
Just as most budget guitars are let down by a lousy set up, they are also usually hampered by poor quality electronics. Once you have a well set up budget guitar, you’ll want to keep it – and if you’re keeping it, you’ll want to consider upgrading your pickups and wiring. This can make a surprising amount of difference to the sound for not a lot of money.
At Reloved Guitars, we will happily swap out pickups and install wiring kits for you (simple setups preferred!) to improve your sound to make the most of your fabulous new Reloved playing action.
A Reloved guitar (with a personalised workshop video) can be a great gift for that special guitar player in your life. We can help you find and buy that special vintage or individual guitar that means so much to them. With amp recommendations and all the basics they need to get playing the moment they receive their gift.
Or you can give the gift of a ‘make-over’ for their tired old (but much-loved) guitar – the one they’ve had for decades or that’s been in the attic in a case for years. With a Reloved re-fret and full set up, you can bring their guitar back to life and who knows, maybe even re-kindle their love for playing.
Custom-designed headstock decals or logos are a fun way of personalising someone’s guitar or to mark a special occasion. We can remove existing decals and apply new ones (designed and printed here) and then re-lacquer to ensure a permanent, glossy finish. You wouldn’t want to do that with an expensive brand name guitar but a low-cost budget guitar is crying out for it ☺
When it comes to guitars and gifts, anything you can think of we can help you achieve – even if it’s just some advice on what to look for and where to start.
